Vermont Ski Resorts
Tourism in the Off-Season
From Killington to Jay Peak to Stowe Mountain, Vermont attracts many ski and winter sports enthusiasts during the winter months. However, what becomes of these resorts in the off season and how do the changing seasons impact the general tourism in these areas?
Since the early to mid 1900s, skiing as a winter recreation has steadily developed and become a great source of tourism for the state of Vermont. Because of its prime winter climate and sweeping mountains, Vermont provides ideal conditions for this seasonal winter activity. The state is home to at least twenty ski resorts which provides lodging for thousands of tourists all year long. Killington, for example, ranks as one of the most popular resorts in the state because of its appeal to beginner skiers and the large number of activities which it provides for all age groups during the off season. It can range from skiing in the winter season to zip lining, mountain coasting, and hiking in the summer season. In the off season, many resorts typically schedule events like concerts and trail walks to attract more tourists to the area. They also offer summer camps. Biking trails are also very popular in the area as the state is also home to some of the best mountain biking routes. These activities thrive during the summer season when the skiing activities go dormant.
Despite being identified as ski resorts, many resorts in Vermont find no lack of activities to keep them afloat all year. From concerts to bike trails to local boutiques, there is plenty for the non-winter visitor to see and enjoy. While Vermont’s visitation trend usually sees a larger crowd during the skiing season, the forests, parks and recreation areas surrounding those resorts assure that resorts remain fully operational all year.
