Designing Schools for Wellness
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the crucial role that schools play in the overall wellbeing of students. The design of educational spaces has a profound impact on the physical, mental, and emotional health of students, as well as their academic performance. To promote holistic development and create optimal learning environments, schools must prioritize wellbeing in their design principles.
One key aspect of designing schools for wellbeing is incorporating natural elements into the environment. Natural light, green spaces, and views of nature have been shown to reduce stress, improve concentration, and enhance overall mood. Introducing large windows, skylights, and open spaces not only increases the amount of natural light but also creates a sense of connection with the outdoor environment. Accessible gardens and outdoor learning spaces provide opportunities for physical activity and encourage students to engage with nature, fostering a sense of calm and well-being.
Another important consideration is the use of color. Colors have a significant impact on mood and productivity. Calming shades like blue and green can promote a relaxed atmosphere, while warm tones like yellow and orange can stimulate creativity and energy. Flexible furniture arrangements and comfortable seating options allow for movement and collaboration, promoting active learning and social interaction. Noise reduction measures, such as acoustic panels and carpeting, can minimize distractions and create a more peaceful learning environment.
Furthermore, schools should prioritize the inclusion of spaces dedicated to physical activity and exercise. Research has shown that regular physical activity has a positive effect on cognitive function, memory, and attention span. Designing schools with dedicated physical activity zones not only encourages physical fitness but also instills a sense of community and teamwork among students. Additionally, integrating active design elements such as walking paths, staircases, and standing desks can encourage movement throughout the day, combating sedentary behavior.
Technology integration is another crucial aspect of school design. As technology continues to advance, schools should incorporate digital tools that enhance learning experiences and facilitate engagement. Interactive whiteboards, multimedia stations, and access to online resources can support personalized learning and foster digital literacy skills. However, it is important to strike a balance and ensure that technology does not replace human interaction or hinder social connections.
Schools must prioritize mental health and provide dedicated spaces for relaxation, and mindfulness as well. Quiet rooms or meditation spaces offer a refuge for students to recharge and manage stress. Designing comfortable and inviting areas promotes emotional well-being and encourages open communication between students and their teachers.
Designing schools for wellbeing requires a holistic approach that considers the physical, emotional, and social needs of students. Incorporating natural elements, optimizing interior design, promoting physical activity, integrating technology wisely, and prioritizing mental health are essential elements of creating optimal learning environments. By investing in these principles, schools can foster a positive atmosphere that supports the overall wellbeing and success of their students, cultivating a generation that is not only academically accomplished but also mentally and emotionally resilient.

Thank you.
As I write this I have, in some respects, started transitioning towards my chapter presidency term ending. I have been reflecting on how this past year has been a year of tremendous learning and growth for me and the chapter. I see a bright future as we continue to learn and grow in this new post 2020 world.
As my term started last July, I wanted to focus on bringing us together after so many remote meetings and virtual events. I wanted to celebrate together, listen, share our stories, and collaborate effectively on our mission and goals. THIS is why I came into IIDA NE, from a desire to be with a community of people focused on Interior Design, meet people, learn, and grow professionally.
I encourage everyone reading this to find your own way to lift-up designers and professionals around you. Attend an event together with a friend. Join a committee with a co-worker. Invite a colleague to be a guest at one of your committees’ meetings or events. When we share and care for each other it will open the door for your growth as professionals and theirs. Find time to share your design journey story with others. Find time to mentor others, your friends, colleagues, and students. If you want to make a difference and bring more voices to the table, this is how it starts. Invite a student to shadow you for a day so they can see all aspects of what we do and why we love Interior Design. Advocate for our profession so young designers can see the value of Interior Design as a viable profession. If we see our own value and share this, it will translate into other people believing in the value we bring to all aspects of design. Keep in mind that small actions are just as important as big ones. Small discussions lead to big ones, every drop counts.
I have been lifted-up by all my IIDA NE friends and committee members these past seven years and especially this past year. I want to thank all of you for being there with me, helping me, growing with me, through the celebrations and challenges. I do see a bright future ahead for IIDA NE and I am looking forward to the next seven years journey with all of you, together, continuing to share our stories and grow the profession of Interior Design. I have been inspired by all our members and volunteers so many times this past year. Thank you all for everything you do!
