Architectural Getaways

As summer starts to wind down (no, not yet!), if you are looking to take one last excursion and are interested in an architecturally significant getaway, you don't have to look any further than right here in New England. Each state has something different to offer - from extravagant mansions, to modest shacks in the dunes, to homes built on private islands, and more! Here are just a few examples of what our six New England states have to offer:

Take a cruise around the Thimble Islands in Branford, CT. This archipelago made up of of over 100 islands just off the coast of the mainland showcases 81 houses, many on their own private tiny islands accessible only by boat.

Tour the Newport Mansions in Newport, RI. Thanks to the preservation society, nine of these ornate historic homes have been restored to their glory days and are open to the public. Here is a summary of "Everything You Need to Know" about the Newport Mansions, according to Architectural Digest magazine.

Take a tour of some restored mid-century modern homes on outer Cape Cod with Cape Cod Modern House Trust (CCMHT) in Wellfleet, MA. The mission of the CCMHT is to collect, archive, and share documentation of the Outer Cape’s exceptional modern architecture, restore a group of important, endangered modern houses, and relaunch those houses as platforms for new creative work. Their most recent acquisition is a Marcel Breuer home which they just acquired this summer.

Tour a couple of Frank Lloyd Wright homes via the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH. The Currier Museum is the only art museum in the world with two Frank Lloyd Wright homes. Accessible by guided tour, they are the only Wright buildings open to the public in New England. Both were built in the 1950s - the Usonian Automatic and the Zimmerman House express two equally beautiful visions through their closely related designs and contrasting materials.

Tour the Vermont State House in Montpelier, VT. Free guided tours are available each year from late June through October. The Vermont State House is one of the oldest and best preserved of our nation's state capitols. After nearly 160 years it remains an icon in Montpelier, the smallest capital city in America. Its House and Senate chambers are the oldest active legislative halls in the United States that have preserved their original interiors.

Take a lighthouse tour in Maine of some of Maine’s 65 lighthouses, many of which are open to the public. Some even offer access to keeper’s quarters or have an adjacent museum. Each year in early September, the state of Maine offers Maine Open Lighthouse Day, a unique opportunity for the general public to explore more than twenty historic Maine lighthouses (many of which are only open on this day!).

No matter which state you visit, New England has something for everyone. Get out there and enjoy some of these architectural getaways - and more!
