Maximalism

Maximalism
When More is Definitely More

Across the globe, hospitality designers are leaning into maximalism in a major way.  By definition, maximalism is a direct rebuttal to minimalism's clean lines and muted colors and is all about embracing excess, opulence, and a profusion of color, pattern, and texture, creating immersive and unforgettable guest experiences. The rising trend of maximalism in hospitality design showcases that "more is more" is the mantra of many of today's most captivating hotels and restaurants.

Maximalist spaces engage the senses in a way that minimalism often does not. By filling spaces with an abundance of visual stimuli, textures, and patterns, maximalist interiors create a dynamic and sensory-rich environment. This sensory overload can be both exciting and comforting, making guests feel like they are stepping into another world. Vibrant wallpapers, intricate textiles, and eclectic furnishings create a sense of wonder and exploration, leaving a lasting impression on guests.

According to Martin Brudnizki, a Swedish interior architect, “The aim is to transport people but also ensure it feels contextual. You are essentially transporting people to another world outside of the streetscape but one that feels entirely natural and suited to the history and future history of that streetscape.”

Maximalism in hospitality design is an act of storytelling. Each element in the design tells a story, whether it's through the choice of antique furniture, bold artwork, or the fusion of diverse design styles. This narrative quality helps hotels and restaurants stand out in a crowded market. Guests are drawn into the story, and their curiosity is piqued, compelling them to learn more about the establishment's unique character and history.

Maximalism also often embraces cultural diversity, blending elements from various traditions and regions. This not only creates a rich tapestry of design but also pays homage to the global influences that make our world so vibrant. A maximalist approach in hospitality design allows spaces to celebrate the eclectic, the exotic, and the unconventional, fostering a sense of inclusivity and global connectedness.

In the age of social media, the visual impact of a hospitality venue is paramount. Maximalist design is inherently photogenic and shareable. The bold, colorful, and unconventional aesthetics make guests more likely to snap and share their experiences on platforms like Instagram. This user-generated content can serve as free marketing, drawing in new guests who are eager to experience the venue for themselves.

Maximalism is all about creating experiences, not just spaces. Each interior tells a specific story and is a fully immersive experience from start to finish. In today's world of hospitality design, it is clear that "more is more," and maximalism is here to stay.
