NeoCon 2023:
Trendspotting in Chicago's Design Scene

NeoCon 2023 marked another year of introductory products and showcased trends to what the future might hold in the furniture design world. From sustainability and wellness to flexible workspaces and technology integration, this year reflected the evolving needs and aspirations of the modern workplace.

Sustainability continues to be a major focus within the design industry, and there were various products that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Manufacturers, such as Haworth’s Digital Knit, are incorporating sustainable materials, such as recycled plastics, reclaimed wood, and low-emission textiles, into their furniture and finishes. The emphasis on sustainable manufacturing processes, reduced waste, and energy efficiency further reinforces the commitment to environmental stewardship.

With the rise of flexible work arrangements and the need for adaptable spaces, there were many products that facilitated agility and versatility. Modular Lounge seating like Andreu World’s Bolete Lounge BIO, is a perfect blend of a reconfigurable solution backed with a strong commitment to reduce our carbon footprint. Made of 100% natural origin BIO® thermopolymer, 100% recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable; this makes it an environmentally friendly piece at the end of its lifecycle, all while giving the users freedom of arrangement and layout.

Privacy and confidentiality remain essential in the workplace, and designers are implanting secluded spaces for focused work or confidential discussions. Privacy pods, offer a balance between open collaboration and private work areas, but also as a space to reset.

ThinkSpace designed a unique solution as a haven for stress-relief. This compact, self-contained unit with acoustical materials that transmits a low frequency vibration to promote the body’s natural healing elements. This not only improves concentration, productivity, but overall employee well-being.

Serving as a launchpad for design trends that shape the future of the commercial interiors industry, manufacturers are responding to the changing needs of the modern workplace and creating environments that promote productivity, well-being, and adaptability. As the industry continues to evolve, NeoCon will remain an essential event for exploring the latest product innovations and design trends that drive the future of workplace and hospitality.
