Oyster River Middle School with Lavallee Brensinger

Oyster River School District, in collaboration with Lavallee Brensinger, embarked on a project to design and construct a state-of-the-art middle school facility in Durham, New Hampshire. The new middle school, catering to 700 Durham, Lee, and Madbury students in grades 5-8, stands as a beacon of educational excellence and thoughtful design principles.
Situated near the University of New Hampshire, the new Oyster River Middle School was carefully planned to promote a collaborative and dynamic learning environment. The school's architectural layout comprises four efficient stories, strategically positioned on the existing site in front of the former school building. This design choice optimizes space utilization and allows for the seamless integration of modern amenities and educational resources.

One of the key design features of the new middle school is its emphasis on team teaching and academic success. The school's layout includes shared spaces on the lower levels, fostering community interaction and engagement, while the upper levels are dedicated to specialized "learning neighborhoods" for each team. These learning neighborhoods are equipped with flexible common areas, breakout spaces, and integrated resources tailored to support Special Education programs.

A central focal point of the school is the learning commons, intentionally located on the entry level. This multi-functional space serves as a hub for dining, learning, and community gatherings, promoting social interaction and collaboration among students and staff. Furthermore, the commons area provides a platform for showcasing student projects, enhancing visibility and recognition of academic achievements.

In alignment with the district's commitment to sustainability, the new Oyster River Middle School incorporates various eco-friendly features and technologies. The building is designed to meet Net-Zero energy criteria, with a geothermal heating/cooling system, photovoltaic arrays, and other energy-efficient solutions. The goal of the project was to achieve a building that generates as much energy as it consumes, thereby reducing its environmental footprint and operating costs, the school exemplifies a holistic approach to sustainability in educational infrastructure.

The interior design of Oyster River Middle School reflects a unique concept inspired by New Hampshire's diverse landscapes. Each team within the school is associated with one of the region's predominant landscapes—Oceans, Forests, Mountains, and Rivers. This thematic approach not only creates a sense of identity and pride within each team but also fosters a deeper connection to nature and the surrounding environment. Middle school is a critical period in a student's educational journey, marked by significant personal growth and exploration. Recognizing the importance of this transitional phase, Oyster River Middle School prioritizes the creation of supportive and nurturing environments that cater to the diverse needs of students. The interior spaces are thoughtfully designed to resonate with the shared experiences of the school community, embodying a sense of unity and inclusivity.

The sustainable design approach adopted by the school district extends beyond energy efficiency to encompass broader economic and ecological considerations. By collaborating with NHSaves utility partners Eversource and Unitil, the school aims to achieve zero net energy consumption, setting a new standard for energy efficiency and sustainability in the region. Through strategic partnerships and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, the new Oyster River Middle School stands as a model of sustainable design and educational excellence for the community at large.
