Earth Day
Planet vs Plastics

As Earth Day 2024 approaches, the interior design industry finds itself at a critical juncture, balancing aesthetics with environmental responsibility. In recent years, heightened awareness of climate change and plastic pollution has spurred a paradigm shift within the sector, leading to innovative approaches and materials that prioritize sustainability.

One of the most pressing issues facing the industry is the rampant use of plastics in interior design. From furniture to decorative accessories, plastic has long been a go-to material due to its affordability and versatility. However, the environmental impact of plastic production and disposal cannot be ignored. In response, designers are increasingly turning to eco-friendly alternatives such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled metals.

Another key focus for Earth Day 2024, with the theme ‘Planet vs. Plastics,’ is the elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) in textiles. PFAs are commonly used in upholstery fabrics and carpets for their water and stain-resistant properties, but they have been linked to adverse health effects and environmental pollution. As awareness grows, consumers are demanding PFAs-free options, prompting manufacturers to develop innovative textiles that are both sustainable and safe for human health.

In the Boston area, renowned for its vibrant design scene, sustainability has become a driving force shaping the industry. Design firms are incorporating biophilic design principles, which integrate elements of nature into the built environment, creating spaces that enhance well-being while reducing the ecological footprint. From green roofs to indoor gardens, Boston designers are leading the way in creating sustainable, livable spaces that prioritize the planet and people.

Furthermore, Earth Day 2024 serves as a catalyst for collaboration within the industry. Designers, architects, manufacturers, and policymakers are coming together to exchange ideas and develop holistic solutions that address the environmental challenges facing the built environment. Through initiatives such as material exchanges and circular design practices, stakeholders are working towards a more regenerative approach to interior design that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency.

As the interior design industry continues to evolve, Earth Day 2024 reminds us of the importance of embracing sustainability as a guiding principle. By prioritizing planet-friendly materials, reducing plastic usage, and promoting healthy indoor environments, designers have the power to shape a more sustainable future for generations to come. This Earth Day, let us celebrate the intersection of design and sustainability, recognizing the pivotal role that interior design plays in creating a healthier, more resilient planet.

Hello, IIDA New England!

Happy Spring (finally)!

Watching a solar eclipse can be fascinating. It was seeing science, community and so much more. Today, communities and cultures around the world continue to view the eclipse in different lights. Across the globe, people gathered to witness this celestial event, each bringing their unique cultural lens to the experience, enriching the weave of human knowledge and appreciation for the natural world. Did you have the chance to observe it? Here are couple of things I learned from observing such a phenomenon.

Vision and Preparation: Like planning for a solar eclipse, effective leaders need a clear vision and meticulous preparation. They must anticipate challenges and have strategies in place to address them.

Adaptability and Flexibility: During a solar eclipse, conditions change rapidly as the moon passes in front of the sun. Leaders must similarly adapt to changing circumstances and remain flexible in their approach. They should be prepared to communicate. Solar eclipses provide opportunities for scientists to communicate complex concepts to the public in an accessible way. Similarly, leaders must effectively communicate their vision, goals, and expectations to their teams. Clear and concise communication fosters understanding and alignment, enabling everyone to work towards a common objective as well as adjust their strategies and tactics as situations evolve.

Resilience and Perseverance: Just as the sun emerged from behind the moon after the solar eclipse, leaders must exhibit resilience in the face of adversity. They should remain steadfast in their commitment to their goals and motivate their team members to persevere through challenges.

Teamwork and Collaboration: Solar eclipses bring people together from different backgrounds and cultures to witness a rare celestial event. Likewise, effective leaders foster a sense of unity and collaboration among team members, leveraging diverse perspectives and skills to achieve shared objectives.

Inspiration: Solar eclipses have inspired awe and wonder in humanity for millennia. Similarly, leaders can inspire and motivate their teams by setting ambitious goals and demonstrating confidence in their ability to achieve them.

Reflection and Learning: After a solar eclipse, astronomers analyze data and reflect on their observations to deepen their understanding of the universe. Likewise, leaders should encourage a culture of continuous learning and reflection within their organizations. By analyzing both successes and failures, teams can identify areas for improvement and drive ongoing growth and development.

Following the announcement of my Presidency in June, I spoke of three themes that will become the focus of our efforts over the next few years. These themes are adaptability, positivity, and responsibility. As we scan the horizon of the design industry, it is crucial that we lead the charge in this fast-changing landscape.

Our Chapter’s goal for the year was to be more inclusive, highlighting our members' diverse backgrounds and motivating others to pursue paths of leadership. We strive to create a culture of belonging and personal value for everyone as we create meaningful human experiences. We believe that greater representation and diversity of thought and experience make us a stronger, more capable, and creative organization.

The strategic planning process for IIDA New England this past winter was a collaborative effort involving key conversations throughout 2023. Involving the community in such initiatives led to a more comprehensive and inclusive strategic plan that truly reflects the organization's priorities and vision.

The fact that the IIDA New England community contributed to the development of the planning, demonstrates a strong commitment towards the organization's mission and goals. By actively engaging with stakeholders and members, the strategic plan is likely to be more relevant and effective in guiding the organization's actions and decisions over the next three years.

Community involvement not only helps in gathering valuable insights and perspectives but also fosters a sense of ownership and accountability among stakeholders. It is encouraging to see such dedication to ensuring that the strategic plan accurately represents the priorities of IIDA NE and sets a clear direction for the future.

The Board of Directors has taken significant steps forward with the launch of this three year strategic plan. This plan is a comprehensive approach to addressing the evolving landscape impacted by COVID-19, economic recovery, equity, and climate change. Here's a breakdown of our achievements and plans:

Launching IIDA New England’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan: This signifies a proactive approach in navigating the challenges posed by the current global situation. Having input from stakeholders and members ensured that the plan is well-rounded and reflective of the needs of those involved.

The Board's Dedication and Commitment: Acknowledging the dedication of the Board members is crucial, as their leadership is instrumental in steering the organization towards its objectives. Their willingness to confront challenges head-on sets a positive tone for the organization's future endeavors.

Updates to Governance Model: The Board examined the governance model to ensure effectiveness in member representation. Aligning the governance model with the values and objectives outlined in the Strategic Plan was essential for coherent and unified progress.

Adapting to Changing Environments: Recognizing the changes within our profession and individual businesses demonstrated a forward-thinking approach. Adapting governance structures and strategies to better serve members in light of these changes was crucial for organizational relevance and sustainability.

Overall, IIDA NE is on the right track towards fostering growth and resilience in the face of dynamic challenges. By aligning strategies, governance, and values with the evolving landscape, we are positioning the organization for success in the coming years.

We continue to look for ways to support our members, whether it is through advocacy, providing opportunities for engagement, or providing those much-needed continuing education credits for our license renewal.

As a board, we are determined that the key to success is ENGAGEMENT—that is the word for 2024! We need your engagement and your help, and we respect your opinions on every matter.

Have a great spring everyone!
