CIDQ Announces the 2016 Louis S. Tregre Award Recipient David Stone, IIDA, NCIDQ, LEED AP is the Recipient of the 2016 Louis S. Tregre Award

ALEXANDRIA, VA: CIDQ is thrilled to present the 2016 Louis S. Tregre Award to David Stone! The Louis S. Tregre Award recognizes outstanding volunteer service to CIDQ. David was selected due to notable contributions to the Massachusetts and Arizona Design Coalitions and his continuous and successful contributions to CIDQ’s committees, especially those related to the exam.

Throughout his career, David has continuously served as a resolute advocate for the profession. He graduated from Arizona State University in 1980 as part of the first graduating class from the College of Architecture’s new Bachelor of Science in Design, majoring in Interior Architecture; this education and experience laid the foundation for his interior design career and desire to further the profession. He strongly believes in legislative recognition of Interior Design as a distinct, independent profession and works tirelessly to help inform colleagues, clients, and the public on the scope of the interior design profession. His efforts align with the significant volunteer contributions of Louis S. Tregre who helped incorporate NCIDQ (now CIDQ).

Laurie McRae, current CIDQ Board Past-President, has seen David’s volunteer dedication first hand and nominated David for this year’s award. “David never steps down from a challenge or worthy cause and is extremely giving of his personal time and energy. He is careful, thoughtful, and deliberate in his approach to volunteerism and problem solving. He is a great mentor to young designers and leads them into and through the profession with wisdom, kindness, and always a great sense of humor!”

David was surprised and privileged to be this year’s recipient. “What an honor to be in the company of so many people that I not only personally know, but highly respect. I hope to be able to live up to their examples while also setting one for future nominees and recipients. This is truly the highlight and crowning achievement of my career. Thank you to the committee and entire CIDQ family.”

About CIDQ: The Council for Interior Design Qualification, or CIDQ, is the global leader in establishing standards of competence for interior design/interior architecture professionals. An independent, nonprofit organization of state and provincial credentialing bodies, CIDQ has issued professional certificates to competent interior design professionals since 1974. Interior designers who meet the eligibility requirements for education and experience and pass the rigorous NCIDQ Exam are assigned a unique NCIDQ Certification number that attests to their qualifications for employers, state regulators, and the general public.

Boston City Fire Code – Upholstered Flammability Regulations

As you know, BIFMA has been working with other stakeholders to recommend that Boston amend its fire code, which mandates the use of TB-133 (open flame test method) for sprinkled and un-sprinkled occupancies.  The city of Boston has been the largest market for TB-133 seating products.

Per a previous memo, we shared that on March 23 the Boston City Council voted unanimously to amend their city fire code to align with the majority of the country which permits the use of TB-117-2013 (smolder test method) for sprinkled occupancies.  We have now been informed that on April 8, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh signed the ordinance amendment that will become effective in 90 days (July 7).

Members of the BIFMA Flammability Subcommittee offer the following information to assist you and your Boston customers in understanding the latest flammability requirements for upholstered furniture.  As noted above, Boston revised its Fire Prevention Code which now aligns with the State of Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code 527 CMR 1.00, Section 12.6.3.  The change allows for the use of upholstered furniture that complies with California Technical Bulletin 117-2013 (TB 117-2013) in all regulated occupancies (Use Groups) that have approved sprinkler protection.

There are still some regulated Use Groups that require compliance with Cal TB133 if the building is not protected by approved sprinklers.  This is consistent with Massachusetts and many other jurisdictions’ regulations.

The following occupancies, without approved sprinkler protection, would require upholstered furniture to meet Cal TB133:

•     ASSEMBLIES – any occupancy used for the gathering of 50 or more persons for deliberation, worship, entertainment, eating, drinking, amusement, awaiting transportation or similar uses.

  • EDUCATIONAL – any occupancy used for purposes up through the 12th grade.
  • HEALTH CARE
  • RESIDENTIAL BOARD AND CARE
  • DORMITORIES
  • HOTELS

•     DETENTION AND CORRECTIONALThis list is not all inclusive.  It can be complex and confusing determining all the requirements of the regulations.  We always recommend that you check with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (Boston FD) to determine the exact requirements for your occupancy/use group.

While the code has now changed, it is still up to the discretion of the local code officials to enforce as they see fit and that designers should always check with the official having jurisdiction for questions or clarifications.

IIDA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF ALA/IIDA LIBRARY INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS
CHICAGO, IL

The International Interior Design Association and the American Library Association are pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Library Interior Design Awards. These biennial awards recognize achievement in library interior design aesthetics, creativity, and function.

“The entries that we received for this biennial competition clearly speak to the evolving needs of 21st-century library patrons,” IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP, said. “They illustrate that library spaces can inspire while still offering the technology, services, and programming that patrons have come to rely on. With our partners at ALA, we are pleased to honor and celebrate this year’s winners.”

Projects were judged by a panel of distinguished professionals, including Christy S. Cain, IIDA, RID, LEED AP BD+C, Principal, idea|span; Stasia Czech Suleiman, IIDA, NCIDQ, Vice President/Senior Project Interior Designer, HOK; Jessica N. Kayongo, J.D., M.A., Sociology Librarian, Hesburgh Libraries, University of Notre Dame; and Mindy Sorg, IIDA, NCIDQ, LEED AP, Interior Designer, OPN Architects.

“The submissions to this competition were extremely strong,” said Suleiman on behalf of the jury. “The projects represented a range of design execution—from understated elegance to bold color and whimsical elements—it was clear that the winning firms thoroughly understood their clients and how to cater to the needs and preferences of the populations who would be using the libraries.”

IIDA membership requires that each Professional and Associate member complete 10 hours of accredited CEU courses within each 2-year compliance period. IIDA New England is committed to presenting 6 programs a year, each with at least 1 hour of credit, and some with 2 hours of credit, to help members achieve this requirement.  These programs cover a wide range of topics that are relevant public safety, good practices and good design skills.

Duffy Design Group, an award winning interior design firm in Boston is seeking a Junior Interior Designer/Project Manager for commercial development and residential projects. Ideal candidate will have experience in a similar role.
Applications are sought from Designers with at least 2-4 years of experience who MUST have worked on commercial and/or hospitality projects. Multi-unit housing development or hotel design experience would be strongly advantageous.
General Responsibility:
o Advanced knowledge of all interior design phases of commercial projects of varying sizes and complexities from conception through construction, Initial programming through construction to final installation.
o Provide conceptual design skills to assist in responding to the needs of our clients and ultimately provide exciting and empowering challenges to our integrated design teams.
o Have a working knowledge of techniques, products, and materials used in both commercial and residential environments.
o You will be expected to prepare interior finish, plumbing, appliance, lighting and hardware specifications and schedules.
o Preparation of full construction document set, including all plans, elevations, details, schedules and specifications relevant to the project scope.
o Preparation of FF&E presentation package.
o Create proposals, purchase orders, and invoices for clients in Studio Webware (SW). Format budget per client specification and update accordingly in SW or Excel.
o Communicate and document information between clients, consultants, contractors, vendors, etc. to insure that the projects adhere to the design intent.
Requirements:
o Highly motivated, strong team building, organizational, communication skills are essential.
o Enjoys working in a collaborative environment and providing mentorship to other designers within the firm
o 2+ years of experience in preparing comprehensive interior design packages including architectural detailing and knowledge of construction documentation.
o AutoCAD experience is essential.
o Individual must possess excellent presentation skills and have the ability to manage multiple projects.
o Conceptual sketching ability desired.
o Awareness and experience in workplace strategies and solutions a plus.
o Adobe Photoshop, Sketch-up program, Microsoft Office Suite knowledge.
